I recently saw Comedian Dave chappelle’s episode of inside the actors studio with James Lipton and he told a story of how his Dad who was a school teacher — as well as supportive of Dave’s comedy — was driving him to a performance one night when he was a teenager and warned him that comedy was a hard thing to break into and he might not be successful. He told his dad that depends on what you define as successful, and that if he could make as much money as a school teacher to do comedy, he’d consider that success. That’s the approach I try to take to writing.
