Recovery and life as a whole can feel like a series of handling setbacks.

Life doesn’t care if you’re in recovery or what you’re trying to heal from, it will hand you handfuls of setbacks without warning.

It doesn’t care if you stopped drinking or using drugs, life still shows up on a daily basis to see what you’re made of, to test your will — to see if you really want it.

Just because you started truly living, doesn’t mean other people will stop dying from diseases, tragedies, accidents, and/or natural causes.

This can sound like a tall harsh order, but it’s simply reality, as I see it.

I don’t know any other choice we have when setbacks show up in dozens on our doorsteps — as they do, have, and will continue to.

In my recovery and in the seven years and some change since I first entered the doors of a twelve-step meeting, I have experienced the death of more loved ones than I care to count, it’d take both hands…
