We’re Not That Different
Some thoughts and observations on human nature and life in general.
I say none of what I’m about to self-righteously. Just because I err or sin differently, doesn’t make me better than anyone I’m pointing the finger at.
In fact, too often in life, we fail to see that those we claim to not like or even hate, are just extensions of the parts of ourselves we subconsciously dislike.
Meaning the real reason we don’t like certain people or specific characteristics of theirs, is because deep down we see ourselves in them and them in us.
When I first consciously made the decision to walk out of twelve-step recovery meetings, and essentially abandon the fellowship I previously credited with saving my life or at least giving me one worth living back, it was because I could not tolerate people who preached one thing but practiced another.
I used the hypocrisy you can find in any large group of people as an excuse to leave the rooms of recovery, failing to see that I was just as guilty of judging people as those I blamed for being judgmental.
Self-centeredness comes naturally to us as human beings. Partly out of necessity, as a means of surviving. We’re hardwired to look out for ourselves and our own, just like every other living thing on…
