Your Last Piece of Writing Wasn’t ‘It’
keep going though.
I know my title seems obtuse and disheartening, however that’s not the intended tone. If you can’t see past your own projections, biases and interpretations, well, you’re going to have a bad time writing online.
I’ve been doing this, specifically in this place, for 8 years. My last piece of writing, was not it. Which is to say, it didn’t go viral, I never thought it might and didn’t position it to. Because, going viral, isn’t “it" either. Whatever it means to you, personally.
Because our ‘its’ will vary. Our own personal interpretations of what I mean, will change over time. Mine included. I’m talking to myself with all of the above as much as I am anyone else. So please understand, this personal essay isn’t personal.
Your last piece of writing was, another spoke in the wheel. It may have been someone, or even many peoples “it" piece. I spot and read It pieces all the time, and enjoy them far more than mainstream media hit pieces. But you’re not done, no matter how great or terrible your last piece of writing was, nevertheless “performed".
Speaking of, theres far more at play when it comes to how our medium pieces perform, than we could possibly fathom or meaningfully wrap our minds around. There’s the algorithm, your algorithm, what editors and curators did or didn’t like about it, and who it actually was visible to, let alone who actually clicked on it and took the time to wholeheartedly read it.
I say all of that to say, keep going, keep writing. No matter what. You started this thing for a reason. You didn’t come this far, to only come this far.
Give us your best “it" and then do it again tomorrow.
